Until 1823, the United Kingdom’s “Bloody Code” imposed mandatory death sentences on over 200 offenses. But even today, people are imprisoned for poorly expressed tweets and fired for minor infractions.
Are drastic punishments efficient, or is there a good reason to abolish them? Are drastic punishments an efficient substitute for policing? What about when the police are very error-prone?
Professor Andrew Clausen from Edinburgh University will be joining us to talk about his publication on these Extreme Incentives.
